The Little Black Dress

A classic. The ultimate ‘must-have’ staple in every girl’s wardrobe made famous by Coco Chanel and the iconic image of Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s.’ If you buy a simple, elegant cut the Little Black Dress will not date and as part of your capsule wardrobe you can dress an LBD up or down in accordance with occasion, therefore, the LBD is a credit crunch friendly purchase!

One-shouldered dresses, ruffles and peplums currently on-trend and great styles if you’ve enough money to buy a seasonal LBD, but if you want an enduringly fashionable Little Black Dress, you should look instead for sharp, flattering shapes like shift, body-con or prom.

Our High Street has a wonderful range of LBD’s on offer, both on-trend and classic styles. My pick of the crop is from Next, this Black Strapless Dress has a modern twist, its front panel is embellished with sequins and mirrored beads that will lengthen and slim your figure. Two textured panels sit either side of this, further flattering your shape. A well designed, structured dress, it’s well worth the £65 price tag! A great LBD for petite ladies.

For a modern design, I recommend the Pirro Dress from All Saints. The body is a bodice; full of structure it has boning and pin tuck detailing. A gathered hitch skirt adds a modern edge and flatters a curvy figure of pear shape. Exposed zip detail on the back of the dress is very on trend. I’m really exited about this LBD, it’s perfect for my shape and as it’s currently on SALE, from £110 to £88 I’ll be snapping one up soon!

There are also many Little Black Dresses on offer for under £50, just as stunning as the two above. Miss Selfridge has a wonderful collection, ranging from leatherette to lace. I adore the Black Cut-Out VIP Dress £50. Panelled, with bust padding and a low back, it looks very much like an ‘homage’ to the stunning dress Madonna wore to the Oscars 2007 (D&G – I think!) it was very ‘old Hollywood’ glamour. Marks and Spencer’s luxurious Occasions, Velour V-Neck Dress £35 also makes me drool, it’s the ultimate retro Little Black Dress!
